Big Universe. Bigger God.
In 2004 we finished a film that was (and still is) very near and dear to our hearts. It was called THE PRIVILEGED PLANET. In it, we explored some of the many reasons why Earth occupies a special place in the universe.
For complex life to exist, dozens of factors have to be in place including: an oxygen-rich atmosphere, an abundance of liquid water, a protective magnetic field, an axial tilt that allows for seasonal changes, and a moon and sun of proper size and distance from our planet. Collectively, these finely tuned physical characteristics (that ensure whales, eagles and human beings) present a powerful case for intelligent design and a Creator who transcends his creation.
For 14 years, Jerry and I have looked forward to revisiting the sciences of astronomy and cosmology and the evidence for God as revealed in the stars, planets and galaxies that fill the night sky. That opportunity finally presented itself.
Late last year we began production on a collection of short films that will premiere on THE JOHN 10:10 PROJECT website during the next four months. Each grows out of two of my favorite passages of Scripture: Psalm 19 (The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands) and Romans 1:20 (God reveals himself through the things he has made).
This month, we’re thrilled to share the first of these films with you. BIG UNIVERSE. BIGGER GOD is a journey from Earth to the edge of the observable universe—in less than 7 minutes. You’ll board an imaginary spacecraft that travels at the speed of light to the outer limits of scientific discovery. It’s a rare and wonderful look at both the large-scale structure of the cosmos and the creative power of God.
Since it’s impossible to get our cameras in position to photograph our solar system, galaxy, and all that lies beyond, we’ve relied heavily on computer animation to tell our story. Jerry Harned and Joseph Condeelis have outdone themselves. This is some of their finest work (and that’s saying a lot). The film is also elevated by another great musical score from Mark Edward Lewis and the rich voice of Alvin Chea.
I hope you enjoy BIG UNIVERSE. BIGGER GOD. Please share it with everyone you know!
