Fantastic Fireflies

If you’ve read any of my eblasts over the past three years, you know that I’m a huge advocate for God’s glorious gift of wonder—especially as it’s revealed in the natural world through everything He has made (Romans 1:18,19). The Lord speaks to us through maple trees, hummingbirds, butterflies and millions of other living organisms…and it’s a monologue that continues 24/7/365.

Birds of the Sun

Ten years ago, Jerry and I packed up our camera gear and headed north to Alaska. Our goal was to find and film one of the world’s most remarkable animal species—the Arctic terns. Every year these small (they weigh less than five ounces) birds make the longest documented round-trip migration on Earth. Their odyssey from the North Pole to Antarctica and back again can cover more than 45,000 miles.

A Whale of a Story

Of all the many fascinating things Jerry Harned and I have photographed during the past 38 years, our experiences with humpback whales rank near the top of the list. We’ve been blessed by numerous opportunities to work in close proximity (sometimes less than 20 feet) of these majestic giants, and the sensation of being sprayed or splashed by a 40 foot, 40-ton animal is incredible.
